David Johns
David studied Advertising Design at the Ontario College of Art. Not long after graduation while working in advertising, he was captivated by the Volkswagen Beetle campaign produced by the agency Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB). David was also influenced by the Bauhaus movement and the Swiss design style. He found minimalist art direction so seductive. That’s when David became a graphic designer.

Looking at any impressionist or post impressionist painting up close, really close, that is what excites me about pastels. Colour, colour, colour. In my working years I was a graphic designer, making complex information easy to understand – simplifying. I recently started using pastel and I’m applying that approach to my paintings. As you can see, I’m enjoying every messy minute.
